Last Time I Saw You….

It’s not uncommon for me to see clients’ guests. Sometimes I see them once. Sometimes I see them multiple times.
It’s also not unusual for me to get into conversations with clients. About all kinds of things. Sometimes small talk, sometimes quite personal. If people want to talk, I’m happy to chat with them. If they prefer silence, I’m happy to be silent.
One day I had a client come in who I’d seen a year or so before.
We went into the massage room, and we were standing there chatting before getting started. How he’d been. How I was doing. Nice small talk stuff.
He asked about my child. And it came.
“Yeah, I remember last time I saw you…”
*he unconsciously lifts his hands, right in front of his chest, as if cupping breasts*
“you were nursing.”
I looked him straight in the eye, well aware he didn’t realize what he was doing, and simply said “Yes. They were pretty hard to miss, weren’t they.”
Because honestly, they were.
We both laughed and moved on.
Sometimes laughing it off is by far the easiest thing for everyone involved.
